Costa Rican developer Sabor Studio has partnered with mobile monetisation outfit LoopJoy to sell physical goods to players directly from its in-game store.

One of the first deals of its kind, the game in question is PotaToss - Sabor's crowdfunded game of potato-throwing - which already allows players to purchase in-game currency.

The new partnership, however, adds PotaToss-branded t-shirts and iPhone cases to the game's digital shelves.

Tapping on either item brings up a prompt for players to 'Pay with PayPal', at which point users can log in to their PayPal accounts to input payment and delivery information.

PotaToss was an early Kickstarter success story, raising $14,000 from 192 backers, months before Double Fine popularised the funding model for games development.

Since hitting the App Store in October 2012, PotaToss has averaged 3,000 installations a day and "is close to reaching 100,000 users worldwide," according to the developer.

Real rewards

"Partnering with LoopJoy allows us to keep focusing on our game and our users while monetising the app and the characters in alternative ways," explained Sabor Studio CEO Jose Cayasso.

The terms of the partnership see LoopJoy taking care of the production and shipping of all physical goods, as well as providing the in-app technology.

Proceeds of all sales are distributed on a revenue share basis.

It's early days, but Sabor already plans to add more physical goods to the PotaToss store in the near future, expanding its selection "as the market grows."

This is nowhere near a first. An easy example I can think of would be the Card Ace deck that was available in the Card Ace: Casino (and now Big Fish Casino) game.
