Days after Finnish developer Supercell launched a Japanese language edition, free-to-play smash Clash of Clans has soared to the top of the free charts on both iPhone and iPad in Japan.
The game, which is one of the best grossing in App Store history in the west, is currently benefiting from a cross-promotion deal with GungHo Entertainment's Puzzle & Dragons, which itself boasts 15 million players across the country.
As such, some are calling Clash of Clans' success in terms of pure downloads inevitable, though the game's position in the top grossing charts isn't quite as impressive.

On iPhone, Clash of Clans currently sits in #23 spot of the top grossing rankings, with the game fairing better on iPad, where it's at #6 in the rundown Puzzle & Dragons sitting atop of both charts.

"My personal prediction is that Clash Of Clans will continue to remain high up in the download charts for a while but that general interest in the game will wane much quicker than in the US, for example," detailed Tokyo-based mobile gaming consultant Dr. Serkan Toto, who broke the news on his blog.
"It always takes time before downloads of F2P games translate to sales, but I think the title has good chances of making it into the top 10 on the iPhone charts (top five if things go extremely well) and quite possibly become a top two or three grossing app on the iPad.
"But as in the downloads rankings, I think sales will go south."
