Too good to be true: Xbox One will not run all Windows 8 apps

Microsoft has refuted the claim that all Windows 8 apps will be compatible with the upcoming Xbox One console, rolling back on a recent declaration by PC manufacturer Dell.

The compatibility issue initially sprang up over the summer, when comments made by Microsoft's Steve Guggenheimer at the Build developers conference suggested the firm's forthcoming next-gen console would support all Windows 8 apps.

However, a recent post on Dell's website really started the rumour mill churning, with the firm claiming "all your favorite Windows 8 apps able to be run on and synced to your Xbox One" in the console's product listing.

One for all?

The problem with such a declaration, Microsoft claims, is that it's simply not true.

The offending declaration from Dell's website

A spokesperson commented on the Dell listing (which is still live at time of writing), stating the "suggestion that all Windows 8 apps run on Xbox One is not accurate".

Said terse comment tempers Guggenheimer's July tease, when he advised a room full of developers that if they wanted to "know about how to get a head start about thinking about developing for Xbox One, the logical thing to do is go build Windows 8 applications."

Still, the careful - and deliberate - usage of the word "all" by the Microsoft spokesperson indicates that some Windows 8 apps will be able to run on the Xbox One.

We've contacted Microsoft for additional clarification or comment on this point and will update this story when we hear back.
