Smartphone app market hits $2.2 billion in first half of 2010

Surpasses 2009's year end total

Smartphone app market hits $2.2 billion in first half of 2010
Having predicted that revenues from yearly smartphone app sales would hit $15.6 billion by 2013, German outfit research2guidance has taken it upon itself to serve up updates designed to make a case for its foresight.

As such, the body has released statistics as part of its latest paper that claim first half revenues for app sales in 2010 topped $2.2 billion.

Such a figure means the value of the smartphone app market is on track to double last year's total, with 2009's year-end figure coming in at $1.7 billion.

Expanding app stores

"The market is gaining momentum as more and more smartphone users have direct and easy access to app stores," the firm says on its website.

"Apple's competitors like Nokia and BlackBerry started to leverage their global reach and increased the traffic on their app stores. This trend will continue in the next several months and years."

The $2.2 billion was generated from the sale of 3.9 billion apps across the six month period - up from 2009's total of 3.1 billion.

Average app prices are also up, hitting $3.60 per paid app in the first half of the year.

The stats are taken from research2guidance's latest report, Global Smartphone Application Market Report Update: 1st Half Year 2010, which can be downloaded from the firm's website for €1,890.
