Juniper Research predicts $47.5bn mobile bonanza by 2010
Juniper Research is known for its somewhat bullish forecasts on how many billions of dollars the mobile entertainment market will be worth. And the company's latest set of predictions don't disappoint.

Juniper reckons that the global mobile entertainment market will be worth $47.5 billion by 2010. As well as mobile games, this also includes music, video, TV, social networking, adult content, gambling and so on.

"Traditionally, services such as ringtones and wallpapers accounted for the bulk of mobile entertainment services," says the report's author, Dr Windsor Holden.

"However, usage patterns are changing rapidly with the increasing availability of more sophisticated and attractive content such as streamed and broadcast video, social networking services and multiplayer games, which have been designed specifically for the mobile environment."

I thought it'd be interesting to dig back to some of Juniper's previous predictions, to see how they've changed.

In May 2005, the company predicted that mobile entertainment would generate more than $59 billion by 2009, while in November 2006, it reckoned the market would be worth $47 billion by 2009. Now it's saying $47.5 billion by 2010, suggesting growth isn't quite as fast as it initially thought. Still $47.5 billion is a lot of spondoolies in anyone's money.
