63.7% of Android users are running Gingerbread

Android has published new information that shows the majority of its users are running its 2.3.x Gingerbread operating system.
63.7 percent of Android users who accessed the Googe Play store between 19 March and 2 April were using the Gingerbread OS.

Froyo proved second popular with 23.1 percent of Android users and Eclair tailing third with six percent.
A full breakdown shows that the tablet-focused Honeycomb 3.0 had a 3.3 percent share, while the newest OS - Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich - had a 2.9 percent share.

The data was released to show to developers just how many devices their games and apps are compatible with.
Down the line
The line chart below shows that developers looking to reach the highest audience should make sure their apps run on older operating systems that they will be compatibile with all current and future API.

It also shows the growth of Android 2.3.3 which has risen over 25 percent over a six month period.
