PocketGamer.biz announces a brand-new 'Game Design & Monetisation' MasterClass programme for 2024

To help game professionals in the industry during this difficult period, we are reintroducing our MasterClass programme, which shares expertise and best-practice advice from recognised industry veterans.

We offer interactive webinars, hands-on online MasterClasses, and a library of focused material on each topic.

Game Monetisation Interactive Workshop

Learn how to choose the best commercial model for your game, whether it's pay-up-front, ads, in-app purchases, or a seasonal pass/DLC. This 2-hour interactive online masterclass will guide you in creating ethical commercial experiences that prioritise player satisfaction, regardless of whether you use free-to-play models or not.

Online Workshop with group exercises using a digital whiteboard to explore the key themes with practical examples focused on:

PLAYER VALUE: Discover the types and forms of what players value in your game and why satisfying their needs is essential for any commercial strategy

EXCHANGE: Learn the benefits of different forms of exchange that enable players to unlock the experience they value, both through playing and paying

PACKAGING: Find out how to make the commercial experience in the game appealing, even delightful, ensuring players stay happy and engaged and avoiding 'player fatigue'

TARGET AUDIENCE: We recommend that attendees have some understanding of the business of games and product lifecycle. The class is intended for game designers and commercial management who want to understand the best strategies to develop sustainable game experiences.

Agenda

Participants will be divided into groups, with each group working through three exercises using a known game as a case study. The workshop will focus on identifying 'player value/utility' in terms of type and form, before moving on to mapping out game loop resource flows (i.e analysing currency 'sinks and sources'), with a view to defining considered bundles for sale from the combination.

Once set up, teams will work through the exercise topic in breakout room format, before reporting back for session-wide discussion and analysis. The workshop running format is summarised below:

  • Introduction and group setup
  • First group exercise: Identify Player Value (in breakout rooms)
  • Pitch your “Player Value” – report & discussion
  • Second Group Exercise: Sink/Source Analysis (in breakout rooms)
  • Pitch your “Sink/Source” – report & discussion
  • Final group exercise: Exchange Bundles (in breakout rooms)
  • Final Pitch “Exchange Bundles” – report & discussion
  • Wrap-up 

Meet your Mentor

Oscar Clark has been a pioneer in mobile and connected games since 1998. He led Wireplay, one of the first online PC games platforms, and was the global lead for games for Hutchison Whampoa (3UK), the most successful mobile Java games platform in terms of revenue per user in the world in 2005. He was also the Home Architect for Sony’s Online Virtual World, PlayStation Home, and the Evangelist for Unity Ads, one of the most successful advertising networks in games. 

He is CEO of Fundamentally Games offering consulting, training and publishing services on PC, mobile, and console. He has run classes for teams of all sizes (AAA to indie) and game accelerators for many organisations, including the Indielab Games accelerator program

He literally wrote the book Games As A Service, which was published in 2014 by Routledge. He is a contributing editor for PocketGamer.biz and a speaker, host and moderator for conference events around the world.
