Surveying the habits of Android and iOS gamers on both side of the pond, numbers published by Newzoo highlight two current trends in the mobile market: the continued popularity of Apple's platform with gamers, and the rise of the in-app purchase.

The key figures from the report focus on money spent in game, with 91 percent of both iOS and Android revenue in the US spent within the apps themselves.

Over in the UK, the same calculation which does not include advertising revenues again comes in at 91 percent on Android, with 84 percent of iOS game revenue spent in-app.

Advantage Apple

Most of Newzoo's other stats focus on the battle between iOS and Android, and Apple's hold over gamers shows no sign of slipping.

In all, there are 101 million mobile gamers in the US, of which 69 percent play on smartphones and 21 percent on tablets. Of those, 36 percent are paying players around 37 million in all with just under 50 million playing on iOS devices, equal to a 49 percent share.

Apple's platform is almost as dominant in the UK, where there are now 23.9 million mobile gamers, 11.2 million of which or 47 percent, if you prefer - play on iOS devices.

Even more impressively, iOS devices generate 84 percent of all mobile revenues from the top 200 apps across both the App Store and Google Play in the US according to figures taken in April.

In the UK, Apple is even further ahead, with iOS devices generating 94 percent of app revenue.

The payment game

In the view of Newzoo CEO Peter Warman, it's not only the strong sales of iOS devices that aids Apple, but also the way the iOS makes paying to play so easy.

"When analysing Apple’s successful monetisation, there is one dominant factor outside of differences in audience demographics and preferences: Apple requires users to connect their credit card information directly to their account, thus creating a seamless purchase experience," details Warman.

"I can hardly imagine any other company in the world that would be able to get away with this, including Google and Microsoft. Facebook can come a long way, but Amazon clearly has the best chance and is proving this as we speak."

Stoking the fires

Nonetheless, there is light at the end of the tunnel for Android, though not for platform holder Google.

"The Kindle Fire, being the runner-up tablet in the US only 3 months after launch, has single-handedly doubled Android’s share of revenues in the US compared to European countries," adds Warman.

"It will do the same in the UK soon after launch, but the rest of Europe might be a different story. Now that we have monthly revenue insight into game revenues across both Apple’s App Stores as well as Google PlayStore we will soon be able to report on this.

"And after that, there is Mac versus PC apps, and then finally...the battle for the TV. Exciting times."

Newzoo's data is sourced from a fresh round of National Gamers Surveys sweeping up a total of 17,000 respondents, conducted in co-operation with Distimo.
