Only 6% of UK consumers interested in apps on TV

UK consumers have very little interest in using apps on their television sets according to a new survey published by digital TV service Freeview.
Reaching out to 2,000 consumers, the study which also gauged interest in other new tech including 3DTV and television on mobiles concluded only six percent of those surveyed found TV apps appealing, with eight percent dubbing them useful.
Tuning out
With the industry increasingly looking towards the launch of an app platform by Apple - services already on offer from the likes of Samsung and Google, amongst others - such findings will come as a blow to those who have staked future growth on such ventures.

However, Freeview believes interest in TV apps in the UK may change with the arrival of the Olympic Games in the capital this summer.
The firm suggests the overwhelming interest in London 2012 will result in users seeking out new ways to enjoy the Games, with apps on television sets gaining momentum as a result.
On a similar positive note, Apple will be pleased to hear interest in an Apple branded TV is surprisingly high.
UTalkMarketing reports an additional survey carried out by consultancy firm KAE concluded 43 percent of UK consumers cited an app-equipped Apple TV as a reason to buy a new set.
