Acer planning Android smartphone

Acer is well established in the computer market, so despite it being a rather far reaching statement, when its chairman J.T. Wang said he believes smartphones could supersede PCs altogether, it’s coming from an experienced source.

In an effort to examine Wang’s vision of an electronic future, Acer is now looking to enter an Android powered smartphone into its 2009 line-up, alongside the ten Windows Mobile handsets it’s already got on the slate.

Acer has stated it wants to establish itself as one of the top five smartphone companies in the world by 2012, so presumably this small venture into Google’s platform suggests it’s testing the smartphone waters with both the end user and the mobile carriers.

Acer’s head of mobile-phone products Aymar de Lencquesaing was careful not to commit the company to any kind of release schedule in an interview with Singapore TV, but did reiterate Acer’s intention to thoroughly test out the smartphone market.

“We have not made any formal announcement of an Android- based device, although it’s likely that we’ll have one in 2009,” said de Lencquesaing. “We intend to have devices that will take advantage of multiple platforms.”
