AMD puts Intel rivalry aside as firm pledges support for MeeGo

It's not exactly the equivalent of a full scale armistice, but AMD's decision to put its weight behind forthcoming smartphone platform MeeGo is notable if only for one reason AMD's long time rivalry with co-platform holder Intel.
AMD has claimed it will provide engineering expertise designed to establish the technical foundations of the format.
The firm's engagement with MeeGo will come via its gold status membership at The Linux Foundation, itself charged with fostering development for the platform.
Firm foundations
"MeeGo represents an exciting, open-source mobile operating system we expect to be adopted by mobile and embedded device makers over time," said corporate VP of software development Ben Bar-Haim at the MeeGo Conference 2010.
"We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units."
All go for MeeGo
Considering the firm's relationship with Intel, the company's support for MeeGo is a notable coup, suggesting businesses who come into contact with the platform see potential aplenty in the coming years.
The Foundation claims AMD, which has a seat on the board of directors, will be a 'valuable contributor to the MeeGo project',
"MeeGo gives companies like AMD and its partners unlimited opportunities to accelerate innovation for the next generation of computing," said noted Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin.
