The first firmware to be released simultaneously on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, Apple has finally rolled out iOS 4.2 to all devices, bringing amongst other features Game Center to its tablet for the first time.

Like their mobile counterparts, iPad owners will now be able to pick up achievements during gameplay, as well as developers permitting challenge and play users on their friends list.

"iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO.

"Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit."

Good things come to those who wait

The latest version of iOS has been a long time coming, with commentators having previously pitched an early November release, following beta testing in October.

Nonetheless, despite the supposed delay, the three devices are now privy to a whole host of new features, including AirPlay, which enables wireless video and audio streaming to Apple TV, as well as to a select array of speakers via AirPort Express.

Apple has also made its Find My iPhone set up previously only available via a MobileMe subscription available to all users, allowing them to locate their device via map and have it display a message or play a sound.

Users can even lock the handset, or wipe data to protect privacy, although anyone with an existing subscription will still have to play.

Apple claims iOS 4.2 will be available to download via iTunes at 12pm CST/6pm GMT.
