While the official financial reports are still waiting in the wings, a report has surfaced indicating Apple's iPad 2 has been something of record breaker during its most recent quarter.

The report, published by DigiTimes, claims 13 million iPad units have been shipped in Q3 2011, although said figure is reportedly some way below Apple's internal quarterly goals.

Economy blues

DigiTimes senior analyst James Wong believes any supposed drop off is because of "the weakening global economy".

"Apple's iPad shipments in the third quarter did not meet its forecast and only reached 13 million units with a sequential growth of 36.8 percent," he said.

Nonetheless, as Wong suggests, such a figure represents a rise from Q2 2011's shipment tally of 9.3 million.

Things look bleak outside of Apple's corner. DigiTimes claims non-iPad tablet shipments grew by 10 percent sequentially during the quarter.

The total number of tablets shipped world wide reached 18.7 million units, with a growth of 28 percent over the previous quarter. This represents a sharp fall from last Q2's 60 percent growth rate.
