Its implementation may not be as wide reaching as many hoped, but Apple's social platform Game Center appears to be drawing closer to full release, with the firm adding the tools for developers to create leaderboards and achievements for their titles.

Those using the service can now input any details for achievements they wish to add to their games, while leaderboards can also be added and split in terms of category and language.

Game Center is go?

"You can now set up metadata for your Game Center achievements and leaderboard categories in iTunes Connect," Apple has informed developers.

"Setting up these elements will allow you to test the full capabilities of Game Center for your app in the sandbox environment."

Speculation suggests Game Center's consumer debut can't be far off, although as previously detailed it would appear its release is going to be restricted to 3GS and iPhone 4 handsets, as well as third generation iPod touch devices.
