Android 1.5 SDK could introduce application problems

Small finger troubles on the way?
Android 1.5 SDK could introduce application problems

We took a quick look at the sneak preview of the forthcoming Google Android 1.5 SDK just the other day, and as more details have been revealed it looks as though one of the main improvements will be tweaking the various user interfaces.

Cleaning up and rationalising the Android input options will be very welcome, as it doesn’t flow as easily under the finger as the iPhone manages. But one small quirk has been picked up on by Phandroid.

The minimum button size in the 1.1 software was 44 x 48 pixels, which makes for a decent sized touchscreen key. Naturally many developers have set their applications to simply use the minimum key size, as it’s perfectly adequate and easily activated by the user.

Version 1.5 has changed the minimum setting, however, to a potentially awkward 24x48 pixels. The problem here is the effect it might have on any Android apps that (quite reasonably) haven’t planned for any potential changes in the system’s basic parameters.

All in all, the update does look as though it’ll provide a much cleaner and accessible Android, so long as no more quirks are discovered after release.
