BAFTA will bestow a special award upon Epic Games at a London ceremony next month.

Epic has been chosen for the special award thanks to the role that Unreal Engine has played in global game development. BAFTA-winning games like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, What Remains of Edith Finch, Rocket League and more have all used Epic’s development framework.

Epic founder Tim Sweeney will accept the award on the company’s behalf during an event at The London West Hollywood hotel on June 12th, 2019.

Creativity and imaginations

“We are delighted to present this year’s special award to Epic Games,” said BAFTA's chair of its games committee Dr Jo Twist OBE.

“Having powered the creativity and imaginations of development teams of all sizes over the years – many of whom have gone on to win BAFTAs - it’s right to mark their huge contribution with this special award as part of BAFTA’s commitment to celebrating and promoting the very best in games.

“Epic is at the forefront of the evolution of the global games industry and the impact of their innovation is undeniable.”

Sweeney added: “All of us at Epic Games are honoured that BAFTA has awarded Unreal Engine for excellence in technology, and we share this recognition with our partners and the creative community.”

The timing could’ve been better for Epic as the announcement comes hot on the heels of an expose claiming harsh workplace conditions and crunch at Epic, largely within the Fortnite team.
