In SCVNGR CEO Seth Priebatsch's words, the location-based arena his app has entered into is a crowded space, yet the newest entrant into the market claims it's already cutting into its rivals' mindshare.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Priebatsch says despite only launching to consumers last week SCVNGR having begun life as an enterprise service - the app is proving popular, breaking records as it goes.

“Every day since launch has not only been our highest traffic day ever, but [also] higher than the day before,” Priebatsch told the site.

"It's growing ridiculously. We're getting tremendous amounts of positive feedback. People are really, really enjoying it and just anecdotally as I'm going from place to place playing SCVNGR, I can see that there's tons of activity going on.

"People are playing challenges, they're snapping pictures, they're scanning QR codes... and it's great to be at the coffee shop by my hotel and see that I'm not alone."

The challenge ahead

Nonetheless, Priebatsch is more than aware of just how populated the market SCVNGR has launched into is.

Booyah's MyTown can call on a userbase of more than 2 million, and Foursquare has recently been touted as a possible acquisition for the likes of Yahoo! and Facebook.

But those behind SCVNGR believe its set-up which focuses on setting those who check-in specific challenges in locations gives it the upper hand against the competition in the long run.

"At the moment the way we look at it is, obviously we're going to be battling for mindshare with a bunch of the other people in the space - the Gowallas, the Foursquares, the Loopts, the Brightkites, the MyTowns," Priebatsch continued.

"We're super excited about it and we keep coming back to the biggest difference between what we think everyone else in the space is going for and what we're going for is the check-in versus the challenge."
