App Store past the 60m downloads mark, says Jobs

And that equals more than $30 million of iPhone app revenues
App Store past the 60m downloads mark, says Jobs

Apple boss Steve Jobs has told The Wall Street Journal that Apple has now distributed more than 60 million applications through its App Store, which launched last month.

What's more, he says that even when you discount the free apps, the store is generating around $1 million of revenues a day, making more than $30 million since it launched.

With Apple taking a 30 per cent share, that means developers have trousered around $21 million from the App Store in that time.

"I've never seen anything like this in my career for software," Jobs tells The Wall Street Journal.

Games have been the most popular category, so it's good news especially for the likes of Sega and Vivendi Games Mobile, who've seen their Super Monkey Ball and Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D remain in the upper reaches of the App Store chart since launch.

Meanwhile, Jobs has also confirmed that there is a 'kill switch' that allows Apple to remotely scrub apps from your iPhone. It's apparently just in case a malicious app is ever approved.

"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," said the Apple boss.
