Sega Mobile has been very quiet lately, other than the occasional dip into the iPhone market. With the success of Super Monkey Ball as an iPhone launch title, it’s a wonder the gaming giant hasn’t made more of an effort to get involved in the App Store.

And now it seems Sega Mobile is stepping away from the J2ME market, too. A new deal has been signed with Gameloft to begin bringing the wealth of Sega IPs to the mobile platform.

“We are confident this agreement will be the first step towards a long term partnership between Gameloft and Sega,” says Gameloft president Michel Guillemot. “Sega's great brands coupled with Gameloft's long standing history of excellence in mobile game development can only result in an extraordinary mobile experience for consumers.”

The deal is set to kick off with an adaptation of the console title Sonic Unleashed, with an expected release date this June.

“With so much entertainment on the go, it seems natural to provide fans with a mobile game based on the much loved Sonic brand,” says Sega Europe A&R director Gary Rowe. “Gameloft's unwavering commitment to quality mobile games combined with a successful track record of bestsellers and unmatched worldwide distribution make them uniquely qualified to develop Sonic Unleashed for mobile.”
