In a stats release surely designed to calm fears about fragmentation on the platform, Google has reported that half of all Android users are now running version 2.1.

Android has long been subject to criticism that, because of a reluctance by carriers and OEM to update their own layers on top of the OS, millions of consumers are running old versions of the software that simply won't run the latest apps.

However, with half of all users now running version 2.1 according to Google, developers on the bleeding edge of the platform can take some comfort in knowing the most considerable audience have access to their apps.

The rest of the userbase is split fairly evenly between versions 1.5 and 1.6, with Froyo (version 2.2) the most recent update, officially released on May 20th absent from the statistics.

The numbers are based on Android devices that accessed Android Market within a 14-day period ending June 16th.
