Blizzard title picks up Golden Cube
Hearthstone and Monument Valley double up at Unity Awards 2014

Blizzard's Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and Monument Valley by London-based studio ustwo both came out on top at the annual Unity Awards last night, both picking up a total of two awards respectively at the shebang.

The UK outfit's illusionary puzzler took home both Best 3D Visual Experience and the Community Choice award, while Hearthstone arguably won the two top gongs – Best Gameplay and the last award of the night, the Golden Cube.

Together as one

The Unity Awards are designed to showcase and celebrate the best games and apps that utilise the engine, taking place on the penultimate day of the firm's annual conference Unite, this time running in Seattle.

"Our core tenet is that collectible card games are awesome, and we want to get people who had never played CCGs before playing them." Blizzard's Eric Dodds told us a few months ago.

"We really aimed for people who like strategy - not just people who had played CCGs before - but perhaps people who have considered playing them in the past and have been turned off for various reasons."

For the first time, this year's winners were chosen by a combined vote taken from Unity itself and the engine's development community.

"We've only ever been told to create something truly special that we're proud to put our names to," ustwogames' executive producer Dan Gray told us of Monument Valley back in April.

"We wanted to achieve this within twelve months to ensure we remained creatively fresh without burning out.
