Considering Intel's continual failure to break into the ARM-dominated smartphone market, it's little surprise the company can not wait for the release of Windows 8 and the opportunity to do something with tablets.

And if the specs released in terms of how its smarts will enable OEMs to make Windows 8 tablets are true, it - and they - might stand a chance.

Score on the doors

These include 30 days standby and 9+ hours battery life, connectivity including 3G/4G, NFC and Wi-Fi Direct, combined with a form factor that will be less than 1.5 lbs in weight and less than 9mm thick.

Intel sees this being represented either by a 10-inch touchscreen device or 11-inch hybrid device with a physical keyboard.

As for Intel's part of the magic that comes with its 32nm dual-core Clover Trail chip, which will sit in the Atom family as the Z2760.

In terms of gaming, Intel points out that Clover Trail will include hyper-threading (two threads per core) and burst mode; the latter enabling high performance without impacting thermal performance.

Windows 8 is expected to be released sometime around late summer.
