GetJar sees 400% boom in its virtual currency uptake

Developers are striking gold too
GetJar sees 400% boom in its virtual currency uptake

A five-fold jump in users in three months is nothing short of spectacular and that's what free apps store GetJar is currently celebrating.

It launched its GetJar Gold virtual currency program in February, hitting 10 million users at the end of July. Now, at the start of November, that number has leaped to 50 million.

Pots of gold

The system works by rewarding people for downloading apps and games, with GetJar Gold available to buy in-game items or unlock additional content.

And because the process is seamless, developers who have signed up for the program are seeing very strong uptake; a more than 200 percent increase in revenue compared to sales generated via Google Checkout, according to GetJar

"The key to GetJar Gold's success lies in its simplicity and accessibility," added GetJar chairman, Ilja Laurs.

"The virtual currency program makes purchasing quick and easy, so that users can continue enjoying the in-game experience. GetJar Gold has also helped introduce secure, paid for apps in countries where availability was previously limited."
