Juniper predicts 300m smartphone sales in 2013

Juniper Research has released a report predicting that annual sales of smartphones will reach 300 million by 2013.
What's more, the company reckons that by then, smartphones will account for 23 per cent of all new handsets sold.
Actually, some might suggest this is a fairly low estimate, certainly in the developed world, where the cost of producing (and thus buying) a smartphone is falling rapidly.
Still, Juniper says that fuelling the growth in smartphone sales will be the trend for everyone and their aunt to launch their own application store (we paraphrase).
"As vendors increasingly open up the operating system software on their devices, so will the rate at which mobile handsets evolve into personalised Internet-centric mobile computers gather momentum," says author Andrew Kitson.
"In this way, users are having an indirect impact on the way in which devices are changing their form and function as well as how they interact with their surroundings. Very soon, the majority of new phones will be smartphones."
By "very soon", presumably he means "sometime after 2013", given that Juniper is only saying 23 per cent of all new phones will be smartphones in that year.
Anyway, if Carphone Warehouse is looking to update its image, changing its name to Personalised Internet-centric Mobile Computer Warehouse might be worth considering now...
