It's not exactly a major move into iPad territory, but the first fruits from Amazon's Kindle Development Kit (KDK) have hit the platform, giving Kindle owners a total of two titles to pick from.

Delivered via Whispernet without charge, both Shuffled Row and Every Word offer up word-based play for Kindle 2 and DX users, with original Kindle owners left out in the cold.

Kitting out Kindle

Said kit, which is currently in beta form, allows studios to develop and submit titles for the platform without charge.

Registered developers gain access to APIs, tools, and documentation to work on their titles, which run natively in Java.

"We continue to work with limited-beta developers who have been given early access to the KDK and appreciate your patience while we work towards opening up the program to more developers," those behind the KDK beta said in a statement, according to ZDNet.

Although Amazon claims J2ME apps can be easily ported to the platform via the KDK, it seems especially unlikely Kindle will ever be graced by a flurry of releases any time soon - both titles coming two-thirds of a year after the KDK beta made its debut.
