In an effort to boost the country's mobile content revenue from products such as ringtones and games the Korean Communications Commission (KCC) is set to regulate charges by mobile carriers.

The KCC reports that the value of the country's mobile content industry in 2006 was 2.097 trillion won, which shrank to 1.897 trillion won by 2008.

A new organisation is to be established to monitor the mandatory opening up the mobile internet networks, and to inject up to 509 billion won to build a new mobile media broadcasting centre.

New guidelines will also be drafted regarding the distribution of profits raised from mobile internet charges to "prevent mobile carriers from abusing their dominance in dealing with content producers".

The games and media industries is a huge part of Korean national income, and keeping it healthy during the global economic recession is a wise move on the part of the Korean authorities.
