Nokia has opened up its new MeeGo OS for handset development, with the baseline source code now available.

Its release follows the debut of the netbook flavour back in May, with those behind the project stating the current release is being actively developed as version 1.1 - itself due to launch on handsets, tablets and other touchscreen devices this October.

Day 1, part 2

“Many of you will remember this 'Day 1' concept from March, when we first made the MeeGo core OS source code available and started development towards the MeeGo 1.0 release," MeeGo's technical steering group say on the platform's development blog.

“The MeeGo UI team has also been busy creating the handset reference user experience and preparing the MeeGo UI design principles and interaction guidelines.

"This milestone marks the completion of the merger of Moblin and Maemo as major architecture decisions and technical selections have been determined."

Looking its best

Its release marks the first look of the OS in action, with the current version including APIs that incorporate Qt and MeeGo Touch UI Framework (MTF), as well as some basic apps although the MeeGo team don't recommend developers installing it on their primary phone just yet.

Nonetheless, the associated video shows what appears to be a post-iPhone UI, with MeeGo offering the kind of interface Android users will likely find rather familiar.
