Announced a the end of February, mobile games portal MocoSpace has unveiled the first three studios set to benefit from its $1 million strong fund to foster HTML5 development.

The venture is designed to bolster the number of HTML5-powered games hitting MocoSpace's browser-based games platform, with the initial roster of developers including New Game Town, Joyplay and Kooky Panda receiving both a cash injection and additional marketing support.

MocoSpace momentum

According to MocoSpace, interest in the fund is an example of how the industry is taking to HTML5 as a tool for mobile games development.

"We are very positive on the future of HTML5-based mobile gaming and are proud to support our first three partners and their exciting titles," said MocoSpace VP of games Robert Lindsley.

"There's still plenty of funding remaining so we encourage all interested developers to contact us and jump into the browser-based gaming space while it’s a green field opportunity."

More to come

The games that result, of course, head straight for MocoSpace's mobile platform, with New Game Town launching Happy Farm this week.

"The MocoSpace Game Developer Fund enabled New Game Town to accelerate our development of HTML5 mobile games and launch at least six months earlier than we had planned," said CTO Jeremy Wang.

Fellow beneficiary Beijing-based Kooky Panda said the fund has had a major impact at the studio, with the team expanding to focus on developing a half-dozen HTML5 titles as a result.

"Kooky Panda firmly believes in mobile browser-based gaming and we've put all our chips on HTML5, so we were pumped to get some funding from MocoSpace to help turbo-charge Kooky Panda's growth in that direction," explained CEO Cherry Wu.
