British web browser game and toy series Moshi Monsters is returning with a new mobile game in 2027.

Entertainment company Mind Candy launched a Kickstarter campaign on June 16th with the hopes of raising £250,000 to fund the project. In under 24 hours, that goal has already been surpassed with fans contributing over £274,000.

The viral 2000s IP is expected to make a comeback just ahead of its 20th anniversary.

Comeback via Kickstarter

The original Moshi Monsters game was created by Michael Acton Smith, the co-founder of Mind Candy and more recently, the co-founder of meditation company Calm.

Moshi Monsters launched as a Flash game in 2008, and over 11 years, it went on to be played by more than 100 million users in 150 countries. It was ultimately shut down in 2019, roughly a year before support for Adobe Flash Player came to an end.

The brand sold over 90m figurines and 170m trading cards during its original run, and Mind Candy has kept the IP alive since the end of service with sleep app Moshi, designed to tame tantrums, teach the alphabet and help children calm down to sleep.

Mind Candy began to explore the possibility of a full Moshi Monsters comeback in early 2025 and ultimately settled on a Kickstarter, following "hundreds of thousands" of letters, emails and other forms of outreach from fans. That decision has ultimately paid off in a single day, with support already beyond the company’s target.

Mind Candy stated that Moshi Monsters’ comeback would not only be fan-funded but "fan-guided", with the company open to listening to fans on how best to bring this game back. Those who support the Kickstarter have the opportunity to join an exclusive Discord server and participate in early testing.

The premise of the mobile title will be a meta nod to the original’s end of service, seeing players rebuild Monstro City after its destruction by the "Flash-teroid".

Fan-favourite characters like Diavlo, Furi, Poppet, Luvli, Katsuma, Zommer and Dr StrangeGlove are also set to return.

"Since closing the doors to Moshi Monsters in 2019, we have seen nostalgia for the game continue to grow, with fans constantly calling for us to bring it back. On its 20th anniversary, we’re excited to bring back the iconic game - not only for our loyal fans, but for a whole new generation of children who have yet to experience the magic of Moshi Monsters," said Mind Candy.

"This Kickstarter is a brilliant opportunity for us to hear directly from the fans and work with them to shape the game. We can’t wait to rebuild Monstro City together."
