BREW 2008: Why are there iPhone games here?

A silly question, perhaps, but...
BREW 2008: Why are there iPhone games here?

It's just hit home that I've been writing stories about new iPhone games from the BREW 2008 conference. That's despite iPhone having nothing to do with Qualcomm or BREW.

And it's made me wonder: why are so many developers showing off their iPhone games at this show? One, IUGO, is officially showing off its Re-Volt iPhone FPS on its stand, and said they got approval from Qualcomm to do so.

What gives? It seems slightly strange, to say the least. Nobody's showing games running on a Nokia phone, for example.

Perhaps it's just an example of Qualcomm not being too controlling when it comes to getting games firms involved in its show, and entering into the spirit of openness that's sweeping the mobile industry.

After all, there's zippity chance of BREW being involved in the iPhone, which has its own application SDK. But it's got me wondering whether there's a remote chance of something else being afoot.

Could Qualcomm be working with Apple on iPhone gaming in some way, that can't be announced until next month's launch of the iPhone App Store?

Last night, I started wondering whether the N-Gage-style mobile gaming community that Qualcomm was talking about developing last year could possibly have been signed up by Apple for iPhone.

But surely not.

Right?
