After the press announcement comes the hard work.

That's the takeaway from Nokia's Valtteri Halla, who's kicked off the MeeGo open source mobile Linux platform initiative between Nokia and Intel on its web portal.

In terms of combined code, it appears there's plenty still to do to get Nokia's maemo and Intel's Moblin OSes working together.

Halla says the target is to have a MeeGo repository open by the end of March; something he calls Day One of the MeeGo project.

Where it goes from there will do down, in large part, to the developers who choose to get involved.

"MeeGo operations are expected and designed to be completely transparent - R&D in the public internet. This is still a baffling proposition to many," he explains.

"So, this is where we need your help. Please make this happen with us by maintaining constructive dialogue, together finding out the MeeGo way of working and being patient and encouraging with newbies not to scare them back inside corporate firewalls."
