Nokia giving away free N-Gage games in India
From public comments by Nokia execs in recent months, it's clear they have one eye on emerging markets for their N-Gage mobile gaming platform.
India appears high on the list of priorities, as Nokia India has launched a promotion offering a free N-Gage game to anyone who downloads the client and registers by the end of this month.
The promotion doesn't specify which game, mind. In Western countries, Nokia has been giving away free copies of EA Mobile's FIFA 08. It's unclear whether the Indian promotion is related to this, or covers separate games.
Handset makers see countries like India as having high potential for mobile gaming, particularly among consumers who don't own games consoles.
However, pitching N-Gage as a platform for low-income gamers is something of a stretch, given that they'll need either Wi-Fi or an unlimited data tariff to download the large N-Gage games to their phones.
