Here’s some advice to help you shine at the pitch.

Stay positive

First and foremost, try not to be too nervous. It’s natural that you feel some nervousness but remember that everyone at the pitch loves games and genuinely wants to see you succeed. The judges want to find the best in you and your project. Focus on the passion and hard work that brought you to that moment, and go into the pitch with a positive mindset. Let the game speak for itself

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this couldn’t be more accurate at the VBIP. If you have a working demo of your game, even if it’s an early version, bring it with you and let the judges play while you talk them through the concept, features, and vision behind it. This approach is far more engaging than a slideshow presentation and makes excellent use of the limited time you have. If they’re able to interact with your game they will be able to give you more specific actionable feedback.

Network and follow up

The pitch isn’t just about the five minutes; it’s also a chance to start building relationships. Exchange contact information with judges, fellow developers and anyone else you meet along the way. Thrive in 2025!

The Very Big Indie Pitch is a regular feature at all Pocket Gamer Connects events! This pitching competition is designed for developers of unreleased games, looking to get some feedback on their game, get them in front of our panel of experts, and possibly win some fantastic prizes. We’ve previously offered tips for participating in the competition, but what happens after you win?

In 2023, the winner of the London Very Big Indie Pitch was Secret Shuffle by Adriaan de Jongh, marking a third win in the competition. Secret Shuffle is a silent disco-like music party game for 4 – 60 players who are all in the same room wearing headphones. The app synchronizes the music so you can play one of 10 game modes together. In one of the modes, called Pairs, you try to find the one other player dancing to the same music, while in Fakers, you try to catch the players who don’t hear any music but act like they do.

With Secret Shuffle offically launching in November of this year, we caught up with  Adriaan de Jongh to learn more about the game’s release and other current projects.

With Pocket Gamer Connects London 2025 less than a month after Christmas, we thought we’d include our top 5 tips for networking success as part of this advent calendar.

Before the conference

1. Make a list of who you’d like to meet - and check it twice!

Set yourself up for success before you even set foot in the venue by working out your essential new contacts in advance. Define your goals from attending and the kind of company that could help you achieve them. 

And how do you find out who’ll be at PG Connects London? Just check the MeetToMatch platform that’s free to all attendees! Not only can you identify key contacts, but you can also plan your schedule, research speakers, panellists and attendees, as well as extend an invitation to meet up.

Take your meeting prep to the next level by looking them up on social media; particularly LinkedIn. Engage with event hashtags such as #PGConnects for an effective way to start conversations before the event. Commenting on or sharing posts can help you break the ice and even provide conversation starters for when you meet in person.

At the conference

2. Mix it up!

It’s tempting to use your time hanging out with old friends and current colleagues - and that’s fun, too - but we’re here to network. To meet new people and expand your contacts database.

Turn it into a game with a target of say, five new contacts per mission to keep expanding your circle. 

Here are three tactics to get you going alone:

• Walk the expo floor solo and see who you bump into.

• Attend the talks and engage in conversation with those around you.

• Visit our Big Indie Zone and play the games being showcased.

One of the main reasons people attend our events is to enrich their professional network and perhaps discover connections that lead to exciting collaborations. You never know who you might meet!

3. Be direct and confident

Networking doesn’t come naturally to everyone and if you find it nervewracking, it pays to remember that many attendees are just as nervous as you. Everyone you meet loves video games, works in the same industry and we’re proud of the family feeling that people find at our events.

You don’t need the perfect elevator pitch - though there’s no harm in having that tied down - it’s more important to engage with people. Start with a simple icebreaker such as, ‘What’s your favourite part of the show?’ or ‘What projects are you excited about this year?’ 

Asking open-ended questions - that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no - allows others to share more about themselves, which eases the flow of conversation. Also, practise active listening by giving your full attention to the other person, maintaining eye contact, and asking follow-up questions. This attentiveness shows that you’re genuinely interested in what the other person has to say, helping them feel more comfortable and valued. 

The Global Connects Party on the evening of day one is a great opportunity to make new friends in a social environment. It can really take the pressure off and also makes day two easier as you’ll see familiar faces around the conference.

4. Bring value to the conversation

What is the most important factor publishers look for in a pitch?

"The most important factor publishers are looking for is actually a range of factors. First up will be:

• Platforms for release

• Estimated release date

• Budget

The publisher needs to understand those points very quickly because each company has a different comfort range for funding and they'll have different openings in their launch schedule as well.

Also make sure you include:

• Monetization model: premium, free-to-play, subscription.

• Feature list: the core elements for your game.

• Unique Selling Points: These are what make your game UNIQUE.  “Post-Apocalyptic Setting” is a feature, it is not unique to your game.

• Story or background overview: Give context to your game’s narrative.

• Visual assets: Concept art, screenshots, or trailers.

• Company profile and experience of team leads.

• Contact information: make sure they can easily get in touch with you. "

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone starting out?

"Don't come out of the gate and try to build your dream game as your first game. Success in this industry comes with experience. Not only experience with coding/art/design/audio/etc but experience with shipping a game. 

Start small, create projects that you can complete in six months to a year tops and release them. Simply having released a game, no matter the level of financial success you had, is a huge step that elevates you in the eyes of a publisher.

Make your mistakes and learn from small games. Later on, you can build that giant deck building, cozy, city planner game with collectible animals you've been dreaming about."

What common mistakes do developers make when trying to get their games published?

"Many developers don't realize the amount of publishers that exist in the market. I'll have a team tell me they have pitched to "everyone". When I ask how many publishers that was, they'll typically say fifteen to twenty companies. That's only scratching the surface! 

We currently track over 500 publishers across PC, console, VR, and mobile. We make that list available to everyone for free.

Always research all your options and make sure you're reaching out to everyone that is a good fit for your game."
