Niantic's location-based megahit Pokemon GO has achieved over 65 million monthly active users in just nine months after it first launched.

To put this into perspective, the United Kingdom has a population of around 65 million as of 2015.

Niantic will continue to look after its enormous fanbase with future updates and live events. It has promised "all new social cooperative gameplay experiences" for the game throughout spring.

Best of the best

It's an impressive figure, and one that outstrips some other massively popular titles. Tencent's Honor of Kings, for example, surpassed 50 million MAUS in January 2017.

Pokemon GO is not only receiving attention from players, but also critics. It won the Best Mobile Game award at the BAFTAs earlier in April 2017 and was nominated for three awards in total.

Niantic CEO John Hanke recently spoke out against VR, saying that it could become a "problem for society". To that end, he will continue to focus on developing AR games that promote real-world interaction.
