The huge popularity of flatulence-focused iPhone apps like iFart and Pull My Finger should make you proud of how far humanity has come, but if you're Joel Comm, it's enough to make you call up your lawyers.

Comm is the man behind iFart, which has been the most popular fart app on iPhone, but he's suing Air-O-Matic, which makes rival app Pull My Finger.

Why? Comm wants a judge to rule that the slogan “Pull my finger!” is a common phrase and not an Air-O-Matic trademark, and claims that the latter company tried to charge him $50,000 for using the phrase in PR materials and a YouTube trailer for iFart.

He also says Air-o-matic tried to get iFart booted off the App Store, but that Apple refused.

It's easy to laugh at two companies squabbling over who gets to use a slang term for farting, but the case shows the fierce competition that exists even at the lowest end of the iPhone apps market.

This being America, we wouldn't be surprised at all if Air-O-Matic counters with a lawsuit of its own. Watch this space
