As anyone who's been to San Diego knows, there are two powers in the city - the US military and chip company Qualcomm.

While it doesn't yet have the power to launch air strikes on foreign combatants, Qualcomm is still flexing its muscles - at least when it comes to another US past time, football.

Previously known as Qualcomm Stadium, the home of the San Diego Chargers has been temporarily renamed as Snapdragon Stadium, highlighting the chipset that features in over 300 tablets and smartphones.

The rebranding starts 18 December when the Chargers take on the Baltimore Ravens and continues through until the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, 21 December and 28 December respectively. All three games are nationally televised.

Labelled as "an initiative designed to drive consumer awareness and brand impact", Qualcomm expects the three games to have around 150,000 fans in attendance, and over 30 million TV viewers.

The ten day campaign will include device giveaways and additionally advertising.

Up the ante

"Mobile is the biggest technology platform in human history, having a transformative impact on billions of people around the world," said Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm's chairman and CEO.

"Naming Snapdragon Stadium will help us drive consumer awareness for Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile processors and how they enhance the user experience on hundreds of millions of smartphones worldwide."
