T-Mobile USA is reportedly planning to ditch its traditional portal in favour of a completely 'open' application platform, in an effort to match the success of Apple's App Store.

"Developers will submit their applications online; the revenue-share agreement will be based on how much the application uses the network; and the applications will be presented to the user in order of popularity, not according to T-Mobile's preferences," says MocoNews, which broke the story.

It'll be some undertaking, given the fact that T-Mobile has a broad range of handsets, and such a store would have to cater to platforms like Android, Sidekick and Windows Mobile as well as Java.

Although not one of the biggest carriers in the US, T-Mobile still has 31.5 million subscribers, making such a store potentially a big opportunity for games firms.
