SAG-AFTRA could strike over AI protections for games performers

The trade union for games performers SAG-AFTRA has voted unanimously to empower its chief negotiator to declare immediate strike action if it cannot reach a deal with games companies over “critical” AI protections.

The union is negotiating with games firms to update the Interactive Media Agreement, with a specific focus on giving its members protections over the use of AI, as well as other terms such as wage increases. The two sides are said to remain “far apart” in their negotiations.

SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 members, including actors. recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, influencers and other entertainment and media professionals.

The news comes months after SAG-AFTRA members already voted authorised potential strike action over these same negotiations in September 2023. Talks have been ongoing since 2022.

“Our resolve is unwavering and should not be tested,"  said SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

"Our membership voted more than 98% yes to authorise a strike of this contract should the employers not come to the table with a deal that includes our critical provisions - especially in AI.

“We are steadfast in our commitment to our membership who work this contract and whose extraordinary performances are the heart and soul of the world’s most popular video games. Time is running out for the companies to make a deal.”
