Scopely has opened a new tech hub in Barcelona where it now employs over 700 staff.

The 8,500-square-metre tech hub is located in Barcelona’s 22@ district, making it the company’s main technology centre in Europe.

Scopely received support from Catalonia Trade & Investment to establish and expand its operations in Catalonia, including ongoing advisory services.

Moreover, the new Barcelona hub consolidates teams from two former offices into a single location at the Green Business District campus, improving collaboration, innovation, and creativity.

The city also serves as the global headquarters for Playgami, Scopely’s proprietary technology platform which supports its games. Half of Scopely’s Barcelona staff are local, while the other half hail from over 100 different nationalities.

Continuous growth

Scopely entered Barcelona in 2017 and has grown to become Spain’s largest video game employer, with nearly 1,000 staff across Barcelona, Seville, and remote teams. Globally, it operates on four continents with around 3,000 employees.

“Barcelona is the location where we’re experiencing the most growth," said Scopely co-CEO Javier Ferreira. “When we were looking for a tech hub in Europe from Los Angeles, we explored several cities, and Barcelona was the most welcoming.

“Catalonia Trade & Investment has supported us from the very beginning and continues to do so today."

Playgami CTO Hugo Pibernat commented: “Of the 20 people who started Scopely in Barcelona, 18 of us are still with the company. That speaks volumes about Barcelona’s ability to retain talent. The story of Barcelona and Scopely is one of the future."

Earlier this year just ahead of the triumphant debut of PGC Barcelona which drew more than 1,000 attendees from 47 countries, we chatted with Scopely's director of operations Néstor Pequeño on the company’s strong presence in Spain.
