The F word is something that's been oft debated about when it comes to Android - aka the Java of the smartphone world.

Indeed fragmentation has most often been pointed out with regard to the OS version a device is running - I'm still on 1.6 (thanks T-Mobile) - something developers have been using to limit downloads to less powerful devices.

This is rather crude way of defining hardware capability however, with some 1.5/1.6 devices capable of running 3D high-end games.

Technical detail

A different approach has been used by publisher Skyzone for Gamelion's physics puzzler Furry Legends. It's released different versions of the game using screen resolution in the title.

Both are priced at $1.99, with users getting the option to pick either Furry Legends (for WVGA) or Furry Legends for 320x480. Free Lite versions are also provided for both versions.

Of course, this requires that gamers know their phone's screen resolution, but at least being a fixed, physical attribute it's slightly less abstract that knowing what OS you're running.
