It’s been a hard couple of years for the Sony Ericsson partnership, which has posted a full year of losses in 2008/2009, but is finding some encouragement in figures just released for the new quarter.

Apparently, the last few months have provided an eight per cent increase in sales for the beleaguered company, though it still represents a year-on-year downturn of 40 per cent.

The decrease was played off by Sony Ericsson partly because of the economic climate, but also admits that the sudden shift toward touchscreen handsets also played a part.

But clearly the (admittedly late and slightly desperate) restructuring that’s been going on at Sony Ericsson as it tried to catch up on the smartphone boom is beginning to pay off. The release of three high-end handsets - the Satio, Aino and Xperia - has given mobile users another reason to pay attention to Sony Ericsson.

Perhaps not enough to bring the manufacturer back to its former high-flying status just yet, but certainly to put it back in the running for third place.
