Sony Ericsson has announced that Najmi Jarwala is stepping down from his post as president of Sony Ericsson USA and head of North America, and leaving the company at the end of this month.

The move is being described as Jarwala leaving "to pursue other career opportunities". There are certainly no shortage of handset firms looking for leadership at the moment, so we're guessing he may turn up at a rival sooner or later.

A permanent successor hasn't been appointed, although Sony Ericsson's EVP and head of global sales & marketing Anders Runevad will take over Jarwala's roles on an interim basis.

"Under Najmi’s leadership we have redefined our North American strategy, built operational excellence and strengthened our total presence considerably in this very important market," says company president Dick Komiyama.

However amicable the separation, it doesn't come at a great time for Sony Ericsson, which earlier this week warned of huge losses in Q1 this year, including a sharp slide in handset sales.

The company has also recently faced speculation that Ericsson wants out of its joint-venture with Sony.
