VC: Don't get carried away with iPhone

Unsurprisingly, iPhone and the App Store were hot topics at last week's MobileBeat conference in California.

However, Richard Wong of VC firm Accel Partners poured some much-needed cold water on the subject, pointing out that - gasp - other mobile handsets are available.

He told startups that they should "intelligently hedge their bets across multiple platforms" according to MobHappy, while highlighting his own company's investment in GetJar - "the store for the other three billion phones that aren't iPhones".

Should games developers be heeding this warning? In truth, no medium-to-large publisher has shown any sign of ditching their existing Java business for the iPhone, so the warning isn't really aimed at them.

It's interesting to hear a VC saying this, though. You could argue that some Silicon Valley VCs have actually fuelled the iPhone hype, by launching multimillion funds devoted purely to funding iPhone apps. They're not doing the same for J2ME games and applications...
