Verizon in talks with Microsoft for next-gen Windows Mobile
Whether or not Verizon is indeed working with Apple to provide either branded iPhone technology or a new range of media pads, theres been no hard evidence as yet, and now rumours are surfacing about the US mobile carrier talking with Microsoft.
The Wall Street Journal cites unnamed sources that suggest Microsoft is finally trying to fight its way back into the smartphone market with a new Windows Mobile powered touchscreen device to be supplied by Verizon.
Its well known that Verizon is keen to take on its bitter rival and holder of the iPhone exclusivity contract, AT&T, with a similar device, which Microsoft apparently hopes will run on Windows Mobile (presumably the delayed WM7).
Carries in the US are facing difficulties in not only providing the right equipment to tech hungry consumers, but stiff competition from the ever growing coverage of wireless internet access.
Smartphones such as the iPhone, Android, Palm Pre and BlackBerry are therefore vital to a carriers retention of customers, which lends weight to the rumour that Verizon is looking to strike as many deals as possible with hardware manufacturers.
