The global version of Koei Tecmo’s gacha game Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator is ending service on March 28th, 2025, a little over a year after its release.

The title’s global iteration first launched on January 25th, 2024, four months after the Japanese version which will remain operational.

The coming shutdown has been announced just days after the game's first global anniversary, therefore, and has been attributed to an inability to continue producing events and refining the game "at a satisfactory standard".

Sinking spending

According to AppMagic data, Atelier Resleriana has generated nearly $57.7 million in its lifetime on mobile with $52.5 million of that sum earned in Japan. This equates to 90% of player spending, likely explaining the Japanese version’s enduring operation.

Taiwan and the US have formed Atelier Resleriana’s next biggest markets, having spent $1.7 million and $1.4 million respectively, or approximately 3% each. Player spending in these two territories has declined considerably since their peaks in February 2024 and they have failed to surpass $100,000 combined in any month since last July.

July 2024 was also the last time Atelier Resleriana surpassed $2 million worldwide - including Japan - and even then, this marked an 85% decline from its $13.8 million peak in October 2023.

This fall in player spending has occurred despite the game’s continued release of new gacha characters across multiple banners per month, predominantly featuring legacy characters from the Atelier franchise’s near 30-year back catalogue.

While providing an opportunity to update older characters into the modern age, gacha banners have also included many characters from the best-selling Atelier series, Atelier Ryza, which began to surge the franchise to new heights in 2019.

Titular protagonist Ryza has also received many alts in Atelier Resleriana banners, appearing in various costumes and scenarios to leverage her popularity, but evidently this hasn’t been enough to sustain the game outside of Japan.

As a result, in-app purchases in the global version have been suspended as of January 27th, and the full shutdown will follow two months today, March 28th.

"To all our players who have been with us on this adventure, we sincerely thank you for your support, and we hope you enjoyed this journey as much as we did. Although service will end on March 28th, we have some events lined up for you to enjoy until the very end," said the Atelier Resleriana team.

"Although this marks the end of a chapter, we are nonetheless still committed to creating and developing games with and for our players, and we hope to see you again in future Atelier works."
