Japanese developer Drecom has nabbed the Disney licence for a new location-based augmented reality game called Disney Step.

As spotted by PocketGamer.com, the title is described as a “real-life treasure hunt”, with players retrieving keys and unlocking treasure chests around real-world locations.

You can get an early glimpse of the title in the trailer below.

Early access

An early access preview for Disney Step is set to take place from September 26th to October 7th. Drecom is allowing up to 10,000 participants to test the title across the App Store and Google Play.

Disney Step is currently scheduled for a full launch in spring 2025. The title looks set for a Japan-only release, with no indication of a wider global launch at present.

Developer Drecom has worked on successful titles in the past including 2016’s Derby Stallion Masters and 2019’s Disgaea RPG. The company has also previously worked with Sony’s old mobile publishing arm ForwardWorks, developing titles such as Mingol.

While a difficult market to crack, Japan has seen some notable popularity of a select few location-based mobile games. According to AppMagic data, the country is the second top grossing region for Niantic’s Pokémon Go, while it ranks as the top revenue generator for the studio’s other title, Monster Hunter Now.

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Walk, meanwhile, has been a huge hit in Japan, becoming the publisher’s most successful mobile game after generating $1.94 billion in gross revenue ($1.36 net) in the country to date.
