Replaying Japan 2026 is the 14th International Japan Game Studies Conference, returning as one of the world’s leading academic gatherings dedicated to Japanese and East Asian videogame research. Taking place August 18–21, 2026, the conference explores the theme “Beyond Games: Intersections of Popular Culture and Transmedia Entertainment,” examining how games connect with anime, manga, film, TV dramas, novels, fandom, and creative labour. The program includes long‑form paper sessions, panels, poster/demo presentations, and a Japanese‑language symposium on play and creation scheduled for August 18.
The 2026 edition expands its scope to highlight how games operate within broader cultural ecosystems, encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue across humanities, social sciences, business, and education. Attendees will also have the opportunity to join an excursion to TOEI Kyoto Studio Park on August 22, adding a cultural field component to the academic program. Since its inception, Replaying Japan has served as the premier international venue for scholars, researchers, and creators studying Japanese and East Asian game cultures.
