India's mobile games market reached 8.45 billion installs in FY 2024-25 more than doubling Indonesia’s 3.34 billion and far ahead of the Philippines at 1.5bn.
That's according to a new report from Sensor Tower which showed that the growth is fueled by affordable data, widespread smartphone access, and increasing cultural acceptance of games.
Even so, in-app purchase (IAP) revenue remains modest at just over $400 million, especially when compared to mature markets like China ($14.8bn), Japan ($11.5bn), and South Korea ($4.6bn).
The report also showed a post-pandemic decline in India’s mobile game downloads, with Google Play dropping 8.7% year-over-year in FY 2024-25. While iOS accounts for a smaller share of downloads, it continues to attract high-value users.
Despite this dip in downloads, IAP revenue rose 8.5% on Google Play and a notable 31% on the App Store, indicating a growing willingness among users to spend.
Continuous growth
Sensor Tower's findings also showed that Ludo King remains India’s most downloaded mobile game, with over 1.25bn all-time downloads and still increasing.
All the same, simulation, arcade, puzzle, and sction genres lead in downloads while dhooter games generate 50% of in-app purchases, followed by casino and strategy genres, which attract more competitive, higher-spending players.
The region's mobile audience is largely composed of young males, with the 18-24 and 25-34 age groups representing the biggest segments.
In November 2024, we reported that India’s games industry made $3.1bn in FY23 and is expected to grow to $7.5bn by 2028, growing 20% each year.
