Technology patents have been in the gaming news a lot lately, mainly since it was revealed that Apple was awarded ownership of multi-touch touchscreen technologies that could cause chest pains for its direct competition.

But there’s also a general opinion that patents are filed more for defence, than attack, though the latest legal action against Nokia, Sony and Nintendo suggests otherwise.

Texas-based company Wall Wireless has raised a complaint over alleged infringement of its ‘Method and Apparatus for Creating and Distributing Real-Time Interactive Media Content Through Wireless Communication Networks and the Internet’ patent by the game hardware companies.

Specifically, it suggests that various user interactions through in-game resources (and the technology to provide them, which is presumably why the complaint is aimed at the hardware systems as much as the software) are where the infringements lie.

The patent apparently covers: “Methods and systems that allow an operator to distribute messages having aural or visual content that is generated by the operator using handheld apparatuses such as mobile telephones" as the patent document states.”

Naturally hardware giants like Nokia are unlikely to roll over easily on a law suit, of course, but the upshot could be a minimum of a license requirement from Wall Wireless.
