Maliyo Games has opened applications for the 2025 edition of its GameUp Africa talent programme.
Now in its fifth year, the initiative trains aspiring African game developers with the skills, tools, and mentorship to build global gaming careers.
The 12-week remote, project-based bootcamp offers hands-on training in game art, design and audio, supported by international mentors, industry trainers, and a collaborative peer network.
New additions include game jams to hone rapid prototyping skills, community meetups for networking and exposure, and an elite program giving top alumni access to opportunities.
Interested candidates across Africa can apply via the official website before the deadline on August 21st 2025.
Turning learners into leaders
Since it launched in 2021, Maliyo Games said it has trained over 1,500 learners from more than 20 countries through GameUp Africa - a figure the company previously reported as 5,000.
“In just five years, GameUp Africa has evolved into one of the continent’s most impactful talent accelerators,” said Maliyo Games CEO and founder Hugo Obi.
“We’ve seen learners grow into leaders, launching their own projects, joining studios, and shaping the future of Africa’s game dev scene. This year’s edition builds on that momentum with even more structure, scale, and support for new talent.”
Earlier this year, we caught up with Obi at the 2025 edition of Lagos Games Week where we discussed prioritising mobile in Africa.
